The following is extracted from a full page review of String Ensemble music:
Having looked at so many arrangements and transcriptions,
one's admiration is doubly renewed for the composer still prepared to commit
their own original ideas to paper! Peter Thompson's String Quartet No4 is only a
year old and definitely deserves a place in the repertoire of a string quartet.
It is a short two-movement work with plenty of contrast in its lyrical and
lively sections. Writing in an essentially tonal language has become quite a
daring thing to do, and it's nice to see a well-written tonal piece. It lies
well for all the instruments, and since all the dynamic and tempo markings are
so clearly indicated, it would be quite a straightforward piece for a group with
a moderate amount of experience to put together. Since it comes in at around 12
minutes it might even sneak into a music-society programme without causing too
much alarm.
