I composed this piece as a wedding anniversary gift for my wife of 49 years, Gillian (known as ‘Gilly’) on 2nd August 2018. She particularly loves the Pre-Raphaelites, hence the cover image. Bars 13 and 14 quote from a prize-winning piece I wrote for clarinet and piano when I was fourteen. The Nocturne marks a significant shift back towards that simple tonality after my many years of avant-gardism—a style that I could perform perhaps adequately, but for some reason could not compose in.
